Six States Launch Operation Wicked Safe; Massachusetts Puts 30 Troopers on Truck Inspections
The Massachusetts State Police said in an Oct. 8 news release that it is joining Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont state police for a coordinated three-day high-visibility patrol, Operation Wicked Safe, running Oct. 13 through Oct. 15. The release names priority Massachusetts roadways: Interstates 90, 91, 84, 93, 95 and 395, plus Route 146, along with other roads participating agencies designate.
Massachusetts State Police Major Sean Maher said the agency's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, known as the "Truck Team," will put 30 troopers on the road specifically to inspect large trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles during the operation. The release does not say other participating states are running commercial-vehicle inspections; it describes their efforts in terms of speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving.
The operation targets a seasonal spike in crashes. In October 2025, State Police logged more than 4,000 crash-related calls for service and MassDOT recorded 38 fatal crashes, making it the deadliest month of the year, according to the release. This is an enforcement operation, not a new rule or law.
