So whatDrivers & Carriers routing through California's Highway 86 checkpoint: expect continued joint CBP/ICE/DOT stops checking English proficiency, logbooks and equipment.

U.S. Border Patrol agents at Indio Station, working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Department of Transportation, ran multiple joint commercial vehicle enforcement operations at the Highway 86 checkpoint in Indio, California, during August and September, according to a CBP release.

Agents inspected at least 196 commercial drivers and vehicles for immigration, transportation, and transportation-safety violations. They issued 57 citations covering English-language proficiency, hours-of-service logbooks, and vehicle equipment, and placed 27 drivers out of service, CBP said.

The release also describes immigration enforcement tied to the stops. Two commercial drivers were found to have violated visa conditions by engaging in prohibited shipping activity; one was processed for a visa violation, the other for voluntary return with his Border Crossing Card revoked. Agents arrested a Haitian national after revocation of Temporary Protected Status, transferring him to ICE. A U.S. citizen semi-truck driver was arrested on an active Texas extradition warrant and handed to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office.

CBP did not name the carriers or drivers involved.
