WSP Targets Fatigued Truckers on I-5 in Thurston County
The Washington State Patrol's Commercial Vehicle Division said it will run "Fatigued Driving" emphasis patrols on Interstate 5 in Thurston County through the end of 2026. Troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers will patrol the stretch between mileposts 100 and 111 twice a month, the agency said in its release.
WSP cited collision data showing driver fatigue as a leading factor in commercial motor vehicle crashes. The agency said fatigue impairs alertness, decision-making and reaction time, and called it preventable when drivers recognize the signs and stop to rest.
Beyond fatigue, troopers and CVEOs will also watch for moving and equipment violations during the patrols, according to the release. WSP said preventing fatigue-related collisions is a shared responsibility among drivers, motor carriers and other roadway users.
The release did not specify citation thresholds, inspection procedures, or whether out-of-service orders will follow fatigue findings.
