Guatemalan Smuggler Gets 30 Years in 2022 Tractor-Trailer Deaths
The Justice Department said Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco, 39, a Guatemalan national, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for organizing the smuggling operation behind a 2022 mass-casualty event in San Antonio, Texas. A tractor-trailer loaded with 64 migrants was found there on June 27, 2022, after traveling roughly 156 miles from Laredo in 90-degree heat with no working air conditioning. First responders pronounced 48 people dead at the scene; five more died later, bringing the total to 53, including six juveniles and at least one pregnant woman, per DOJ.
Court documents say Miranda-Orozco arranged transportation and lodging for migrants moving through Guatemala, Mexico and into the United States. Two migrants he personally smuggled died in the trailer; a third survived serious injuries. He was arrested in Guatemala in August 2024 and extradited in March 2025. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy and aiding-and-abetting charges tied to bringing migrants into the U.S. resulting in death and injury.
The case was prosecuted under Joint Task Force Alpha, DOJ's lead effort against human smuggling networks operating along the southwest border and beyond.
