Maine Adds Vehicle Inspection Module to CDL Skills Test

So whatDrivers & Fleets: new CDL applicants in Maine must now complete a Vehicular Inspection Module before testing; build extra prep time into training schedules.

Maine's Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) updated its CDL exam page to require a new Vehicular Inspection Module for all CDL applicants as of November 1, 2026. The agency's notice does not describe the module's content or scoring in detail, but it tells applicants to check which version of the Commercial Driver's License Manual matches their test date.

The BMV also flagged a second change on the same page: starting September 1, 2027, "modernized testing" will be required for all CDL applicants. No further detail on what that testing entails was posted.

The changes apply to the skills and knowledge testing process for new CDL applicants in Maine. The notice gives no indication that current CDL holders need to retest or take any action. Carriers that train or sponsor applicants in Maine should confirm their testing partners and in-house trainers are using the updated manual and inspection module ahead of exam dates.
