New Jersey CDL Drivers Get Electronic Medical Certificate Transfers

So whatCDL holders & carriers in New Jersey: medical examiners can now file your certification directly with NJMVC electronically; confirm your examiner uses the new system to avoid paperwork delays.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission said it has put the National Registry II (NRII) system into place for commercial driver license holders. The NJMVC said the system lets medical examiners transmit a driver's medical certification directly to the agency electronically, instead of relying on paper forms submitted by the driver.

The agency said the change is meant to make the exchange of medical certification information for CDL holders more efficient. The notice did not describe penalties, new deadlines, or changes to existing medical certification requirements for drivers. It also did not say whether electronic transfer is now mandatory for medical examiners or remains optional alongside paper submission.

National Registry II is a federal framework FMCSA has promoted nationally to let certified medical examiners upload driver certification results into state licensing systems. New Jersey's announcement describes its own rollout of that capability rather than a new federal rule.

The notice gives no figures on how many examiners or drivers are affected so far.

What's next

  • Watch for NJMVC guidance on whether electronic submission becomes mandatory for examiners.
  • Drivers renewing CDLs in New Jersey should ask their examiner whether they use NRII before assuming certification was transmitted.
