CBP Finds 886 Pounds of Liquid Meth in Truck Fuel Tank

So whatCarriers & drivers crossing at Calexico: expect secondary inspections on empty trailers and fuel-tank checks after this seizure.

CBP officers at the Calexico Port of Entry Commercial Facility seized more than 886 pounds of liquid methamphetamine on Oct. 22, the agency said in a release. A U.S. citizen driving an empty 2016 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer applied for entry and was sent to secondary inspection. Officers noticed discoloration in the vehicle's fuel tank. A sample tested positive for methamphetamine.

Officers pulled 22 five-gallon buckets of the liquid drug from the tank, according to CBP.

San Diego Director of Field Operations Sidney K. Aki said the seizure showed the work of CBP's intelligence teams and frontline officers at the Calexico facility, crediting the coordination with stopping the drugs "before it could reach our communities," the release said.

CBP did not say in the release whether the driver faces criminal charges or identify the trucking company involved. The agency's release lists the incident under its Border Security, Cargo Security and Drug Trafficking categories.

What's next

  • Watch for any follow-up CBP release on charges or the driver's status.
  • Calexico commercial carriers should anticipate continued secondary-inspection scrutiny of fuel tanks on empty trailers.
