Georgia Senators Announce $25M for Truck Parking Projects

So whatCarriers & Drivers: new truck parking is coming to the Port of Savannah and I-75 southbound in Monroe County, but no construction timeline has been announced yet.

U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock announced on October 19 that the Department of Transportation will deliver more than $25 million in federal funding for two commercial vehicle infrastructure projects in Georgia. The money comes through DOT's INFRA grant program, which is funded by the bipartisan infrastructure law.

The larger project is a new $13,490,220 truck parking expansion within Weigh Station #6 and Rest Area #22 on Interstate 75 southbound in Monroe County, built on existing Georgia Department of Transportation right-of-way. The second project is an $11,950,000 commercial motor vehicle parking facility adjacent to Georgia State Route 21 in Garden City, serving the Port of Savannah.

The senators' office said the combined funding totals more than $25 million. Neither the press release nor the attached project table gives a construction start date, completion date, or number of new parking spaces to be added at either site.

What's next

  • No construction or completion dates have been announced for either project.
  • Watch GDOT and the Georgia Ports Authority for construction schedules and space-count details.
