Illinois Gets $12.6M for I-57 Truck Parking Expansion

So whatOwner-operators & carriers on I-57: expect roughly 38 new southbound spaces at Green Creek and Post Oak plus parking-availability kiosks once built; no completion date given yet.

Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth said the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will receive $12,645,145 in federal funding for the Southern Illinois Truck Parking Expansion Project. The money comes from DOT's fiscal year 2026 INFRA Track 2 program, according to the senators' release.

The project will rebuild and expand the Green Creek Southbound and Post Oak Southbound rest areas on Interstate 57 in Marion County. Work includes new facilities, upgraded utilities and drainage, and about 38 additional truck parking spaces, the release said. IDOT also plans to install Truck Parking Information Management System technology, including automated vehicle detection, electronic kiosks and security equipment.

Durbin said the investment gives drivers "better access to the facilities that they need." Duckworth said the project will increase parking capacity and improve safety for drivers in the area.

The senators' release said the expansion will more than double current commercial parking capacity at the two rest areas and could save drivers an estimated 36 to 44 minutes per route through better parking information. The release did not give a construction timeline or completion date.
